There’s no doubt about it - every time you give someone a gift, it simply feels good. You get to look forward to them opening the present and seeing their smile and excitement, and it’s a hugely gratifying experience to make somebody you love or care for happy.
But have you ever thought about why giving gifts feels so good? Fortunately, researchers at the South University in Savannah, Georgia, wondered exactly the same thing.
Associate Professor Devin Byrd and chair of the Department of Behavioural Sciences said “there is an emotional lift when searching for the gift”, and that gifting is a true act of altruism, where you do something selfless for the well-being of others.
Byrd added that the nature of the gift often depended largely on the relationship between the giver and the giftee. For example, “if it is friend to friend, people will remain thoughtful… if it is a romantic relationship, people will try to go for sentiment as well. [Gift-giving] taps into how we connect with that individual.”
Therefore, a friend might give another friend something thoughtful such as this CZ music note charm - perhaps for someone who loves music.
Whereas a partner might give his girlfriend or wife something more along the lines of this beautiful white gold diamond heart pendant, which is about as romantic and sentimental as it gets.
There’s no doubt that making someone you care about smile is one of the best feelings there is, and seeing them cherish the gift and wear it will always make you smile too.
