Father’s Day is coming up on Sunday, September 6 this year – are you ready?
While you think about all the awesome things your dad does, and perhaps how you might thank him this year, here are a handful of Australia’s most memorable and iconic fathers.
For many of us, he was the Crocodile Hunter, but for two children, he was just ‘dad’.
Steve Irwin was a passionate wildlife conservationist and a doting father to his two kids, Bindi and Robert. Bindi recently turned 17 and spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the legacy he left behind. She said that he didn’t do his work to be remembered, but to ensure people remember his message about working with wildlife.
Today, Bindi works at Australia Zoo and plans to follow in her father’s footsteps.
Whether he’s on screen playing our favourite superhero (Wolverine, of course) or playing father at home, Hugh Jackman is one of our favourite Aussies.
Something not everyone knows, however, is that Hugh and his wife Deborra-Lee are both strong advocates for adoption. Both of their children, Ava and Oscar, are adopted.
In July this year, the husband and wife duo attended the Adopt Change charity dinner in Melbourne where they advocated for Australian kids waiting for adoption. Deborra-Lee herself is the founder of the charity, and together they make a powerful pair in campaigning for children throughout the country and the world.
Aussie rocker Keith Urban has two beautiful kids with fellow Australian and actress Nicole Kidman. The couple is famously private when it comes to their children, Sunday and Faith, even refusing to pose for fan photographs while on family holidays.
When asked if his little girls were showing any love for music like their famous dad, Keith said both loved music, and that Sunday, in particular, loved to sing. He spoke to American magazine Us Weekly, saying that if that’s what they wanted to do, he would support the girls all the way, and that “whatever they show an aptitude for and a passion for, they just have to work at it… no matter what they do.”
It sounds like these girls have a loving, supportive father at the helm as they grow older!
Most well known for his role as ‘the mentalist’, Simon Baker is often heard speaking about his absolute devotion to his family.
The TV show that truly launched his career is finishing up later this year, but instead of being upset about the end of this era, Simon is just excited to spend more time at home. He is married to fellow Australian Rebecca Rig, and together, they are parents to children Stella, Claude and Harry.
After the announcement of the final season, Simon spoke to Body & Soul website and said “it will feel so good to be able to spend more time at home… more than anything I want to dedicate my time to my family.”
There are plenty more great dads out there in Australia, so don’t forget to say thanks this Father’s Day.
