Grooms-to-be have long headed to their local jeweller to find that perfect diamond ring for their perfect girl. But why?
Diamond as the stone of choice in an engagement ring is the accepted norm, and for very good reasons. Here’s why diamonds are still at the top of the engagement market.
A ring has long been given as a symbolic gift at an engagement, but diamond rings have only been in vogue for a little over 50 years. For a long while, diamond rings were only popular (and affordable) in the upper European classes, and later in Victorian times. That all changed when diamonds were discovered in Africa, and DeBeers opened mines there.
Diamonds only became the standard engagement stone of choice after a 1947 marketing campaign by DeBeers that introduced the world to the slogan, “A diamond is forever”. The most popular style has long been the round 'brilliant' style, and the diamond has since been the stone of choice for many men and women.
Diamonds rings are so popular as engagement rings, in fact, that it’s rare to see a woman wearing one on any finger but her ring finger.
Regardless of what you thing of the cultural understanding of diamonds, and regardless of how you feel about their look, there’s one benefit to proposing with a diamond ring that’s backed by science – this gemstone is the toughest of its kind.
Diamonds are ranked at level 10 on the Moh’s hardness scale, which is the highest possible level. It basically means that diamond is extremely hard to scratch or crack, and no other gemstone is tougher. To compare it to normal items, your fingernail only measures 2-2.5 on the scale, and a steel file only rates at a 6.5.
As engagement rings are designed to literally last a lifetime, a diamond is often the most practical choice. Due to their durability, diamonds can also be shaped into many different cuts such as emerald, oval, and princess, without risking the stone’s integrity.
You will still need to get the ring checked at regular intervals as indicated by your jeweller. He or she will be able to ensure the setting is still sturdy, the diamond still sparkles, and the metal still retains its strength and shine after decades of constant wear.
Diamond engagement rings are symbolic and strong, but they are also a symbol of the height of style and elegance.
Firstly, there is that sparkle that only a diamond can achieve. It’s the first and most obvious difference when you see the real thing, especially in sunlight or under the lights in the jewellery store. It doesn’t take a professional to notice how the expertly cut facets twinkle the light back at you, and how the overall effect is nothing short of mesmerising.
Secondly, a diamond is a girl’s best friend in the same way that a little black dress is – it simply goes with everything, and looks good on everyone. The brilliant white shine of a diamond is the perfect accessory for any outfit, whereas coloured stones may not always complement that same clothing choice.
